The last couple of years were not a good time for the film industry. The onset of COVID-19 and its associated restrictions meant film theaters remained closed for much of these two years. So the number of film releases declined sharply from 2019, with theatrical releases being particularly hard-hit. However, as the world is adjusting to the pandemic, things are slowly starting to get back to normal. Cinemas have also started re-opening across the world so there is plenty to look forward to for movie-goers in 2022. There are scores of theatrical-only films waiting to debut on the silver screen, like Avatar 2 and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Streaming platforms, like Netflix and Amazon Prime, have also ramped up their film production. So you will have plenty of movies to watch this year, both on your personal devices as well as in theaters. Here are some of the most anticipated movies of the year.
Jurassic World Dominion (June 10)
Jurassic World is returning to movie theaters this summer with the release of Jurassic World Dominion. It is a sequel to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, released four years back in 2018. Colin Trevorrow has returned as director for this one. There will be a nostalgia overdose as some of the original “Jurassic Park” cast will also be a part of this film. Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum are all returning back to the series after over 25 years. Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt are also back reprising their roles from the first two movies of the rebooted franchise.
Lightyear (June 17)
Lightyear is a spin-off of the “Toy Story” universe. This year film audience will finally get to see a dedicated movie for Buzz Lightyear. Chris Evans will voice the titular character, after edging out Tim Allen for the role. Although the trailer promises an interesting interstellar adventure, little more is known about the plot of the movie.
The Black Phone (June 24)
The Black phone is another horror film produced by Scott Derrickson. It is based on the titular short story written by Joe Hill. The movie stars Ethan Hawke. He plays the role of a serial killer, who honey-traps children in a soundproof basement. However, 13-year-old Finney (Mason Thames) finds a damaged phone that transmits the voices of earlier victims.
Elvis (June 24)
Elvis Presley died in 1977, so it is quite surprising how his life has not been immortalized in a biopic. That is until now. The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll is finally getting a movie made on his life, 45 years after his death. Austin Butler will play the lead role while Tom Hanks will be playing the role of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The film will explore aspects of the relationship Elvis Presley had with his manager. The movie also stars Yola Quartey, Olivia DeJonge, Natasha Bassett, Luke Bracey, Dacre Montgomery, Kelvin Harrison Jr., David Wenham, Richard Roxburgh, and Helen Thomson.
With movie theaters being shut worldwide for much of the past two years, the global film industry must be relieved after the re-opening of cinemas in the year that just passed. There are some great movie releases slated for 2022. While we wish you get to enjoy going to theaters to watch these movies, there will also be plenty of film releases on streaming platforms that you can watch from the comfort of your home.
