EV Charging and Chargers: A Guide

Meanwhile, although some electric vehicles (EVs) employ lead acid and often nickel metal hydride batteries, lithium-ion batteries are now thought to be the industry standard because of their longer lifespan, good energy retention, and low self-discharge rate of only 5% a month. Charging Methods for Different Electric Vehicles

Following are the three different charging methods for different electric vehicles:

  1. Trickle Charge

The 220V conventional (three-prong) connector is the slowest way to charge the EV at home. So, only in extreme circumstances, with prudence, and after consulting with the electricity companies, is it advised.

  1. AC Charge

One can use AC household charging to charge the vehicle 3 to 4 times faster with a wall box. There is also public AC charging accessible.

  1. DC Charge

The quickest place to charge the electric vehicle (EV) is at a public DC fast charging point with a power of at least 50 kW. This technique allows one to fully charge the batteries from 0 to 80%  in around 40 minutes. Additionally, certain ultra-fast charging points already offer more than 150kW of power.

Types of EV Chargers

There are four different plug types: two AC plugs that offer charging up to 43 kW, and two DC plugs that provide fast charging up to 350 kW.

So, the two types of AC plugs are:

Type 1: Single-phase plugs are the typical plugs for EVs. Depending on the car’s charging capacity and the grid’s capacity, one can charge the car at a pace of up to 7.4 kW.

Type 2: Triple phase plugs include three extra wires that allow current to flow through. They may therefore charge the automobile faster, of course. So, the maximum charging power available at home is 22 kW, whereas the maximum charging power available at public charging stations is 43 kW, but again, based on the charging capacity of the car and the grid.

And the two types of DC plugs are:

CHAdeMO: This rapid charging technology was created in Japan and supports both bidirectional charging and very high charging capacities. So, at the moment, Asian automakers are setting the standard for CHAdeMO-compatible electric vehicle offerings, and it supports charging at 100 kW maximum.

CCS: The type 2 plug has been improved, and the CCS plug has two extra power connections for rapid charging. Both AC and DC charging is supported here, and it permits charging up to 350 kW per minute.
